What We Believe-Confession and the Office of the Keys

What We Believe

Confession and the Office of the Keys

*We confess the necessity of confessing our sins.
*We confess that we need to confess all sins to God, even those we are not aware of.
*We confess the benefit and need of confessing to our neighbor the sins we have committed against him/her.
*We confess that there is benefit to private confession before the pastor, but that it is for the comfort of the one doing so.
  It is not required.
*We confess that God absolves our sins by His grace.
*We confess our need for such absolution.
*We confess that absolution cannot be given to the unrepentant, nor withheld from those who repent.
*We confess that the absolution spoken by the pastor is from God Himself.
*We reject any excusing of sin or diminishing the need for forgiveness.
*We reject any notion that Christians are no longer sinners and thus, need not confess their sins or receive absolution.

What questions do you have about confession?

The Office of the Keys
*We confess that the forgiveness of sins unlocks heaven, and withholding forgiveness locks heaven.
*We confess that lack of repentance should be dealt with in a serious, yet loving manner.
*We confess that repentant sinners receive forgiveness.
*We confess that unrepentant sinners do not receive forgiveness.
*We confess that all efforts should be made to call the openly unrepentant to repent, using Matthew 18:15-20 as our guide.
*We acknowledge that in some cases it is necessary to pronounce excommunication (that the unrepentant has excluded himself/herself), but that this is always an attempt and desire to bring about repentance.
*We confess that Christ established the Office of the ministry to exercise this power, as well as to administer the ministry of Word and Sacrament in Christian congregations.
*We confess the biblical qualifications for the pastoral office and reject the bestowing of that office in contradiction of those qualifications.
